Emily Miller
Managing Editor
Emily Miller is Consumer Notice’s managing editor. She has 13 years of professional journalism and editing experience and nearly two decades of personal experience as a patient living with Crohn’s disease.
The Hill published her personal story about the high cost of prescription drugs in the United States. Other media organizations, including Fox Business and United Press International, published her research and reporting on U.S. prescription drug prices.
Emily brings a unique perspective and passion to Consumer Notice. She was diagnosed with a chronic illness as a child, and as part of her daily routine for more than a decade, she unknowingly took some of the potentially risky drugs consumers can learn about on Consumer Notice.
Emily understands how it’s easy to assume drugs are safe simply because they are FDA-approved. However, through her personal and professional experiences, she has learned that some drugs and medical devices can leave patients with life-altering consequences without proper warning. This is a fact that motivates her to help patients and their families stay informed when it comes to medical products and procedures.
Emily began her professional career as a journalist while attending the University of Florida. She worked as an editorial and marketing assistant for Miami magazine and as the production assistant at The Brechner Center for Freedom of Information, a unit of the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications. She also contributed to the campus newspaper, the Independent Florida Alligator.
Emily went on to work as a writer for UF Health News; an editor, producer and anchor for WUFT.org; and a correspondent for The Gainesville Sun. She worked for the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press in Washington, D.C., and the San Antonio Express-News in San Antonio, Texas.
Her assignments ranged from writing and editing news and feature stories about health topics to covering state and federal court proceedings, lawsuits and the U.S. Supreme Court during the time of the Affordable Care Act decision.
Emily also composed scripts for Health in a Heartbeat, a podcast on consumer health information and the latest medical research news. It airs on public radio stations in more than 55 markets nationwide in addition to being available on NPR.org and the NPR One mobile app.
After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in journalism from UF, Emily covered crime, breaking news and local government for the South Florida Sun Sentinel. There, her passion for being an advocate and voice for victims only grew stronger, and in 2017, she joined Consumer Notice.
Emily holds five Health Literacy certificates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including Health Literacy for Public Health Professionals; Writing for the Public; Creating Easier to Understand Lists, Charts and Graphs; Fundamentals of Communicating Risks; and Using Numbers and Explaining Risks.
She is a past member of The Alliance of Professional Health Advocates, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Society of Professional Journalists and the Society for Technical Communication.
